Advanced Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs)

In the world of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), the battery system, often referred to as the battery pack, is composed of hundreds of lithium-ion cells connected in series or parallel to meet voltage and power requirements. However, the complex structure of these battery packs often leads to thermal gradients due to restricted heat transfer between individual cells. Uneven temperature distribution within cells, modules, or the entire battery pack can cause variations in charging/discharging behavior and electrochemical performance, further exacerbating temperature inconsistencies. This non-uniformity reduces the lifespan of the battery system, lowers capacity utilization, and can even lead to system failures. Therefore, maintaining temperature consistency across all cells is a critical challenge for BTMS to overcome the "wooden barrel effect" in battery systems.

Why BTMS is Essential for NEVs
To ensure the widespread adoption of NEVs, battery systems must operate reliably under extreme conditions such as high-rate charging/discharging, high or low temperatures, and other demanding environments. These conditions increase the risk of battery system failures, making an effective BTMS indispensable. The choice of heat transfer medium—whether air, liquid, or phase change materials (PCM)—significantly impacts the cost and performance of the BTMS.

Air Cooling: A Cost-Effective and Reliable Solution
Air cooling is widely regarded as an economical, reliable, and efficient solution for BTMS in NEVs due to its simple structure, lightweight design, and ease of maintenance. Air cooling can be categorized into natural convection and forced convection:
- Natural Convection: Relies on air flowing spontaneously over the battery pack. However, this method is often ineffective for NEV BTMS due to limited heat dissipation capabilities.
- Forced Convection: Utilizes air pumps and evaporators to circulate cooled or heated air, offering significantly better heat exchange efficiency. Forced convection is further divided into passive and active systems:
- Passive Systems: Draw air from the atmosphere or cabin, but their performance depends heavily on ambient temperature.
- Active Systems: Use pre-conditioned air from the HVAC system, providing superior thermal control in extreme conditions (e.g., sub-zero temperatures or above 45°C).

Optimizing Airflow for Maximum Efficiency
The design of airflow channels plays a crucial role in the efficiency of BTMS. The two main airflow structures for NEVs are parallel ventilation and series ventilation:
- Parallel Ventilation: Offers lower maximum temperatures and more uniform temperature distribution compared to series ventilation.
- Axial Ventilation: A novel design for cylindrical cells that maximizes space utilization within the battery pack, delivering higher power density for NEVs equipped with cylindrical batteries.
